A: Calcium has been fed as high as five times the horse's requirement without any ill effects, provided that the phosphorous intake is adequate. The maximal concentration of calcium in the horse's diet is 2%, however it would be hard to find feeds that reach that level.

The amount of calcium and phosphorus required by horses depends upon their age, stage of growth, pregnancy, lactation status (in mares), if the horse is grazing tropical grasses that contain oxalates (eg. Kikuyu grass) and how much work the horse is doing.
